Created by the Christian Counseling and Educational Foundation (CCEF), this adoption expert advises that we tell our adopted children that “this is your story, God is the author of your story.” No matter how difficult their pasts were, children should know their stories. When they know their full story they are not so inclined to feel shame, but rather feel empowered to make every aspect of their stories count.

When to tell children the particulars about their stories depends on the child and their situations. “Reinterpreting” their stories is helpful in bringing the children to an understanding of their lives. “Framing” their stories for them in the context that brings them to a knowledge of their past, as well as to the vision of a hopeful future, is important. What could be painful in actuality becomes a teaching opportunity.
