Whitney was 12-years-old when she came home from school and found her mom passed out.  A knock on the door was the beginning of life in foster care.  She and her brothers were removed and it was frightening.

They were told that they would stay together, but it was only hours before they were separated.  Her older brother tried to protect them and keep the family together, but it didn’t work.  They were able to see each other at court, but reunification of all of them didn’t happen.  It happened quickly for Whitney and her brothers.

Typical of foster children, Whitney quickly realized she needed to take care of herself.  Already having been the responsible one in the home – taking care of her mother – she was able to care for herself.  Life in foster care was hard.
