An Ohio woman, 18, was having a difficult time finding a special Christmas gift  for her stepfather. The solution came to her in a dream. She said, “I had a dream that I asked him to adopt me. My Christmas present to him was adoption papers.”

Makayla says her stepdad, Stephen Dabney, had raised her like his own child since she was five years old. The two have had their ups and downs over the years, like in any relationship, but at the end of the day, he is her father and he will always be. She grew up and is in college now, but after all these years she has decided to take his last name. She decided to really be his daughter.

Dabney recalled, “When I first met my wife, I handed her my business card and she looked at me and said, ‘I have a daughter, do you want this back?’ I smiled and said no.” He was raised by his stepfather, so he had not only an excellent example to follow, but also knew firsthand the importance of the stepfather figure being a good dad.

There are many reasons for adult adoption. It will never be considered unnecessary because being part of the family you love should always be available to everyone. One of the reasons for adult adoption would be to formalize a relationship betwwen a parent and a child. Stepparents can adopt children, and biological parents can adopt their child with whom they have reunited and with who were once placed for adoption. Another reason for an adult adoption would be for inheritance purposes. The requirements for inheritance vary from state to state. Any queries should go to the Secretary of State.
