An Ohio woman, 18, was having a difficult time finding a special Christmas gift  for her stepfather. The solution came to her in a dream. She said, “I had a dream that I asked him to adopt me. My Christmas present to him was adoption papers.”

Makayla says herstepdad, Stephen Dabney, had raised her like his own child since she was five years old. The two have had their ups and downs over the years, like in any relationship, but at the end of the day he is her father. She is in college now, but after all these years she has decided to take his last name.

Dabney recalled, “When I first met my wife, I handed her my business card and she looked at me and said, ‘I have a daughter, do you want this back?’ I smiled and said no.” He was raised by his stepfather, so he had not only an excellent example to follow, but also knew firsthand the importance of a stepfather being a good dad.

There are many reasons for adult adoption. One reason would be to formalize a parent/child relationship. Stepparents can adopt children, and biological parents can adopt adult children they have reunited with who were once placed for adoption. Another reason for an adult adoption would be for inheritance purposes. Requirements vary from state to state. Any queries should go to the Secretary of State.
