A Minnesota Native American couple are seeking the best life possible for their child. They hope to place their child in an adoptive home with white parents. However, the national and state laws forbid it. The 1978 Indian Child Welfare Act is a federal law that requires Native American children to be placed only in Native American homes in order to maintain culture.
The couple has retained an attorney to fight in behalf of the child and the adoptive parents. The Native American child is already living with the hopeful adoptive white parents. This case is expected to be decided upon in court on July 8th. It is likely that the battle will continue though, and possibly go as far as the U.S. Supreme Court.
