Adoption in Minnesota

What an exciting time in your life, you have decided to look into pursuing adoption to grow your family. It can be an overwhelming and hard experience at times and choosing an agency to work with is probably one of your first really important decisions. In this article, we will explore options for adoption agencies in Minnesota (MN).  My biggest piece of advice in choosing an adoption agency is to make sure you feel comfortable working with the agency and specifically your agency worker. The adoption process is very personal and requires you to share very personal and intimate details of your life with your worker. Making sure you have a good personal relationship with your worker is crucial. Let’s explore some adoption agencies in MN.

Private Adoption Agencies in MN:

There are several private adoption agencies in MN, and I will not be able to cover them all in this article. I highly suggest you research any agency you are wanting to work with. This is a crucial decision in the adoption process. Make sure you also understand what form of adoption you are pursuing and how the agency you chose will best be able to help you.

Here are some services a good adoption agency will provide:

  • Options Counseling for expectant parents
  • Lifetime Counseling for birth parents
  • Post-Adoption Services
  • Financing options
  • Parent Profiles

Public (No Fee) Agencies:

County social service programs are also available in the state of Minnesota. If you wish to work with a public agency, they usually provide no-fee adoption and foster care services. You must work with the agency in the county in which you reside.

I urge you to do as much research as possible when choosing an agency. I also suggest you attend as many informational meetings as possible. Then, you will get a feel for what to expect out of that agency and have the chance to meet some of the people you may be working with. You can also talk with your family, friends, or neighbors who may have also gone through the adoption process. They can be some of the best referral sources for you because they know firsthand.
