Catholic Priest Will Not Stand Trial for Illegal Adoptions

Chilean Catholic priest, Gedraro Joannon, will not face prosecution, stated a judge who ruled that the actions took place too long ago. Joannon admits to taking at least two babies from unwed mothers, telling the mothers the babies had died, then placing the babies with adoptive parents. The Catholic priest even held funeral masses for the babies.

At the time, the stigma against unwed mothers was so strong that he acted, not for personal gain, but to protect the women and the children. This was a time when dictator General Augusto Pinochet ruled the country. It was a time of state-sponsored assassinations and disappearances.

Although Joannon does not dispute the accusations, nor does he dispute the relationship he had with one of the birth mothers, the courts will not prosecute because the time deadline has passed.
