News Video: Proposal to Open Adoption Records in Indiana Stalls in House

Birth records for adoptees born between 1941 and 1993 in the state of Indiana are not available without a court order. There are more than 350,000 adoptees who would be affected by opening these birth records. Adoptees knowing their identities not only helps to create a feeling a completion, but it also gives access to important medical information.

Those opposed to the bill are fiercely protective of birth mothers who placed their children for adoption in an anonymous fashion. If the bill gets passed, those birth mothers who may not even hear about passage, could then receive “the call” and be shocked or even devastated.
