Adoptive Father and Daughter Stuck in Sierra Leone

Single father Claude Perras legally adopted his daughter, Ella, in July of 2014 even though Sierra Leone law prohibits adoption by single men and hadn’t met the stringent six-month mark for caring for Ella.  And yet, a judge approved the adoption.

The Canadian government does not recognize this adoption as legal and is requiring an affidavit from the ruling judge in Sierra Leone explaining the ruling before he will allow Perras and little Ella into the country. The judge is outraged. “He told me it was interference, a diplomatic issue.  Would I go to a Canadian judge and ask him for an affidavit on one of his rulings?” quoted the Sun News Network.

Perras and his fiancee are hoping the governments can figure it all out so he can soon return with Ella.
