How Adopted Children Understand Racism

In this video, created by “Adopted: The Movie,” Dr. Joseph Crumbley talks about how adopted children understand racism. Having met with several adopted Chinese children, he learned that every single one of them have experienced racism.

Following his visit with the children, he visited with the parents and explained that the children really have been treated with prejudice because of their different race.

Now, children seem to focus on the differences they all have, regardless of race or adoption. Helping adopted children — especially those in a transracial family — deal with prejudice is helpful for a developing self-esteem. But all children, adopted or not, will be teased, laughed at, and have differences pointed out by peers. Therefore, raising all of our children to be tolerant of others and to choose to not base their worth on what others say, is vital.
