Adoptive Parents Answer How to Involve Your Extended Family in Adoption

Educating extended family members about adoption, terminology, appropriate relationships with birth families, etc., can be challenging. Often, extended family members may have strong feelings and expectations regarding the types of adoption (open, semi-open, closed); yet, adoptive parents and birth parents may have different expectations. Generally extended family want what is best for the adoptive parents. However, a lack of experience and education about adoption will sometimes lead to confusion, or sharing of opinions in a way that is less than helpful.
