How Does a Home Study Work in a Domestic Adoption?

Regardless of the type of adoption chosen, and regardless of the state from which you are adopting, a pre-placement home study is required. The home study includes an evaluation to ensure that the family is suited for placement with the child. Additionally, there is a lot of paperwork to be completed, including a background check. Some of the paperwork includes information about the individuals in the family, specifically the parents, which includes opinions, values, and more. Although it is called a “home study” it is more of a study of the hopeful adoptive family than of the home. There are requirements, mostly safety requirements, but the visit is not as concerning as many hopeful adoptive parents may be expecting.
