Parents Talk About Adopting the Culture of Their Children

This panel of adoptive mothers share their ideas about incorporating the culture of an internationally adopted child into your home.

Of course, research into your child’s culture is required.

It’s important, also, to realize that each of your children will have their own feelings about incorporating their culture into their new family life.

Ideas include having family meals from their countries of origin, celebrating holidays specific to their culture, regular discussion about their home countries, playing music and even learning the language to a degree.

Celebrating differences helps children to feel included and “normal.”  Always being prepared to answer questions, and especially taking the time to be sensitive to your child’s inquisitiveness, is also important.
