Mother’s Day weekend holds a special place in my little family’s heart. Of course it’s always lovely to receive breakfast in bed Sunday morning, but the best part of this weekend happens Saturday. The adoption community celebrates, “Birth Mother’s Day” on the Saturday before Mother’s Day. It’s a day to celebrate the love of our children’s birth mothers!

Since we adopted our son, Harley, we have spent Birth Mother’s Day with his birth mother, Sadie. We love to take her out to lunch and then out to play with our little family. Harley loves having Sadie with us. He is always so excited to give her loves and for her to play and be involved with his shenanigans.

We moved to Ohio two years ago, and while we haven’t been able to physically see Sadie on Birth Mother’s Day, we make sure to set up a time where she and Harley can Skype. Harley loves to take her own tours of his bedroom, sing her songs, and of course, play cars. They have such a beautiful relationship, and we want Harley to know how much we love Sadie and how important she is to our family. It’s such an honor to celebrate Birth Mother’s Day. Without Sadie, I wouldn’t be a mother to sweet Harley. She helped us complete our family: not only with Harley, but with herself.
