11-year-old Juliese Padgett is an author. And she is adopted. Leaving a Chinese orphanage at the age of three, Juliese was welcomed into the Padgett home as child number three, with a sister still to come. It was when a friend pointed out to Juliese that she looked different than others, she began to have doubts about herself. “I kind of felt like the ugly duckling,” Juliese said.

And so her mother, who is also a teacher, helped her through those feelings with writing. With her mother as editor, Juliese wrote the book, “The Newest Flower.” It will be released this spring and encourages everyone to see the good (and the differences!) in themselves. All proceeds go to help orphans who have not yet had the blessing of adoption.
