New Zealand’s historic rugby team made up only of players who can prove Maori blood—”All Blacks”—is lucky to have Liam Messam as a star player. But they’re not the only ones who are blessed to have Liam attached to them. Liam was adopted through foster care as an infant by Lewis and Wanda Messam, a loving couple who are now in their 70s.

The Messams began fostering children when they had just three biological kids in their home. Through the years they fostered over 400 children and adopted five, including Liam. And if the Messams are proud of Liam, it doesn’t even compare with how proud he is of them!  ”I’m very blessed, I don’t think I’d be in the position I am today without the family, so I am very grateful I am a Messam.”

Wanda and Lewis have just added one more foster child to their family, a five-year-old who will be their last. “He’s getting tired,” says Wanda, referring to Lewis.
