Duval County privatized their adoptions in 2002 and celebrated their 3,000th adoption this week. Since Family Support Services of Northeast Florida took over, the county’s adoptions have tripled, leaving many to joy over the speedier process. Just this year, over 160 children’s adoptions have been finalized.

There are both advantages and disadvantages to privatizing, as reported by The Council of State Governments. Of course, the safety of children is most important, and whether privatized or government-run, safety takes priority. But privatization has proven to work for many states. There is less stress and strain on government agencies, the Council reported, and children are placed in permanent homes more quickly.

For the Bell family of Duval County, celebrating the adoption of their twins was about more than helping their county reach 3000, according to the Florida Times-Union. Jasmine and Jacob entered the Bell home as foster children last year, and it didn’t take long for the parents, their daughter, Destiny, and the twins to feel like a family. This day was a milestone for both Duval County and for the Bell family!
