A little over six years ago, Rob Manzanares was told by his girlfriend that she was pregnant. He filed for paternity rights where they were living, in the state of Colorado, but his girlfriend left the state, delivered the baby in Utah, and placed her for adoption with family members. A few years later, the state of Utah gave partial custody to Manzanares, stating that the adoption was illegal, but it was in the child’s best interest to stay with the only parents she knows. Now, six years after the birth of his daughter, Manzanares is appealing the case and asking for full custody of his daughter. Many across the country are watching this case closely, as the outcome may have significant impact on the paternal rights of fathers.
