My husband and I were recently contacted by a birthmother living in Quebec who found us through an adoption website. Her due date is Sept. 22nd. We are U.S. citizens, and we know very little about adoption law in Quebec. This birthmother says that Quebec law prohibits birthmothers from choosing families for their babies. She also says that if she were to drive from Quebec to Ontario to deliver, the hospital fees would be covered by her insurance, and Ontario permits open adoption. We want to be sure that we follow the laws of both Canada and the U.S., and we won't proceed with a plan until we're sure that we're following the proper guidelines.
We'd appreciate any insight you can give us!
