TO ANYONE WHO WAS ADOPTED IN UTAH OR PLACED A CHILD FOR ADOPTION IN UTAHTO ANYONE WHO WAS ADOPTED IN UTAH OR PLACED A CHILD FOR ADOPTION IN UTAH -URGENT!
I apologize for the unsolicited contact. If you have received this email it is because you have been in prior contact with the Childrens Service Society regarding information from your adoption file or a reunion with birthfamily. I am writing today because we need your help with some upcoming legislation regarding adoption records:
Representative Jim Nielson is collecting emails from Utah-connected birthmothers and adoptees stating they are in favor of HB 256 which is being presented before the legislature this month. The bill would upgrade the Utah Mutual Consent Registry, which is the only mechanism in place to help adoptees and birthmothers seeking reunion, and is dismally ineffective. The bill would also allow adoptees from this day forward and from 1941 back to be allowed access to their original birth certificate; with birthmothers being allowed the option to waive in or waive out at their will as their situation warrants. Here is a link to the full text of the bill if you are interested: Bill Text - HB 256 - Utah 2014 General Session - Open States
This is a summary of what Rep. Nielson needs. EMAILS NEED TO BE SENT BY TOMORROW, WEDNESDAY FEB 19!
Please send an email stating your support to jimnielson@le.utah.gov
Put in the subject line: Re: HB 256 PRO THIS BILL
Write a BRIEF letter to explain:
1) why you are for changes to the law that would allow ALL adoptions to be open in Utah (in respect to contact between parties) without the red tape and ineffectiveness of the mutual consent registry; and that it is better to allow a birthmother who wants a closed adoption to legally state so at the time of placement rather than forcing everyone into a closed adoption whether they want it or not (with the option for all birthmothers to change their minds anytime).
2) why you don't like the current system of closed adoption with a mutual consent registry as the only option for reunion or information exchange
3) and why you are against the status quo of our states' current law.
SIGN YOUR NAME, YOUR ADDRESS & PHONE NUMBER, AND STATE THAT YOU ARE A BIRTHMOTHER OR ADOPTEE (Letters from adoptive parents and anyone else effected by this law are also welcome.)
Rep Nielson emphasized that it would be best for the letters to be brief and to the point. Make your point and explain why you support the bill in the first line, then you can add more details. Most people will read only the first line!
Thank you for your help, and please share this message!
