I suspect that Dd has a UTI. Last night she had a wet diaper before bedtime and made a face that was similar to her "poopy" face. This morning, her first diaper of the day smelled like ammonia. So far, so good for the rest of the day. To top things off, she is teething. Two molars at once and she is grumpy, refusing food and running a temp of 101.4. So, I am wondering if I am making a big deal out of nothing and everything is related to teething? I called her pediatrician a few minutes ago and they want to see her in the morning and they said they would probably put a cath in to check for infection. That breaks my heart!! Anyone else been through this? I am wondering what to expect.

My daughter had to have a cath put in when she was only a couple of months old and it was quite heartbreaking to watch (though not as bad as the spinal they also did on her...). That said, a UTI is pretty serious in a tiny little body, so if there is a possibility of UTI, I think it's something that just has to happen. Or maybe the dr. will see her and not think it's necessary--you could get lucky!
If she does have to have one, I feel for you and for her, but it will be quick. They just have to get a "clean catch" and that's how they do it with very young children. It will be overwith quickly.
If you use a bottle, I'd suggest taking one with you. When it's over, she'll probably want to snuggle and nurse or have a bottle if you still do either of those. Amazing the resorative power of being close to Mommy.

Please please get to your Dr!!! UTI can turn into sepsis and trust me you do not want that! Little ones do not have the immune system to fight off the infections like we adults. Is your baby possibly slightly dehydrated? THat can cause the ammonia smell as well. is there red streaks in the diaper if so GO NOW!
Thank you sooo much for your replies. I just don't know what to expect and that always bothers me. If I am prepared, I handle things better and I do hate to see her suffer. I have been checking her diapers closely and have seen NO signs of blood and no more ammonia smell. She could have been very slightly dehaydrated. I stepped up her fluids today just in case. We have an appointment tomorrow morning at 8:30...Hopefully we will get this taken care of ASAP. Thanks again!
