Is it safe to give a 17 mo. old Benadryl? Dd has constant coughing, drainage and runny nose. She's always been this way. We have tried Zyrtec, Singulair and several different neb. treatment and haven't really ever got her totally well. Right now she is taking Singulair, Pulmicort (for Asthma) and an albuteral neb treatment as needed. Still the same old symptoms. My poor baby!!!
Benadryl has always helped me tremendously, even better than the prescription drugs I've tried. When I have asked Loren's ped. about giving Benadryl, she says we need to try other meds first. Is there a reason? I asked our Pharmacist ( who is a close family friend) about Benadryl and she said she could take a 1/4 tsp very safely. Anybody have any advice?
No knowledge here, but I know Benadryl knocks me out....perhaps the sedative affect is why the doc wants to try other avenues first??

Children's Benadryl says under age 6 to ask a doctor. (Which means adult Benadryl would be a NO.) I would assume your ped said that because it DOES make children sleepy/tired.
I am not a doctor, however I would agree with your pharmacist. I have given my daughter a 1/4 teaspoon at that age too. It works great!
Thanks for the advice. It seems that Benadryl can have an adverse reaction is some kiddos. While I am one of the people that is totally knocked out by the drug, some kids become very hyper.
We did a trial dose last night and she did just fine. A little more tired than normal, but nothing too bad. I'm so glad to have another alternative to Zyrtec and Singulair as they don't seem to help her at all.
My little brother has severe eczema and our dermatologist told us to give him Benedryl everyday to help control his itching and allergies. He has been taking it since he was about 15 months old with no adverse reactions. It doesn't make him sleepy or hyper.
