OK, this is probably a REALLY dumb question but:
when do you start NOT putting the car seat in the MIDDLE of the back seat?
Is there a certain age? Or just when you have another kid?

The center of the back seat is the safest seat in the car. So, my vote is when the child can't or won't fit there anymore.
Like, when two carseats can't fit next to each other and so they have to have the empty middle seat between them. Or when the child is so tall their head keeps you from seeing out the back window. That sort of thing.
But I don't know *how much* safer it is, if there's an age at which it doesn't matter so much, or an age at which it statistically doesn't matter (kinda like the age at which you can sit in front of an airbag).

My husband just asked the same question last night! I told him a child can be on the side from birth. After all, what would you do with 2 kids? It is safest in the middle. We are considering moving Cameron's to the side in dh's car because he does not ride in there often and it is a pain to get him into the middle. In my van he is already on the side because I have bucket seats.

usually, you switch car seat positions once your baby passes the one year mark or until at least they weigh 20 pounds.
After a year, they're usually placed in front facing car seats, while older kids will have to use booster seats.
but if they don't fit in their car seats anymore, i think it's wise to opt for a new car seat, just to be safe.:loveyou:
