Our son has been slow to speak - we brought him home at just under 6 months. We get him speech therapy, but every time I ask how many words children have (on average) at this age, they shy away from telling me. I'm not looking for a medical diagnosis -- we have enough of those LOL -- just a gist of what passes for the "norm" So... love to hear how many words kids have who are around two and have been home since around 6 months -- and whether the words are clearly recognizable, or sort of fuzzy and only recognizable to mom & dad. Thanks!

Our son turned two a couple of weeks ago. He says a handful of words that others might recognize. He says probably about 20 words we recognize. He has started saying phrases ("where did it go?", "all gone?"). Sometimes he'll surprise us and say a word or phrase but then he won't say them again (he's probably just toying with us!). I can tell he's on the verge of just letting it all come out. I think he's just being a little stubborn.

at our int'l adoption clinic appt (6 months follow-up visit) last week, I expressed my concern that Zoe wasn't saying many words (she is 18 months old), and I told them she said about 9-10 words and signed about 15 other words. They assured me she was fine.
However, when I wrote down all her words later that day, I found she has 35 words (and she has added "bubbles" this week, although I have to put a start by it, because she actually only SAYS "bubby").
I think the reading and having conversations really does help a lot.

JudyMend! Your son is making me feel like my daughter is slow! They are about the same age and she says mamadadachoo choo (for dogs)baba That is it. End of list. Now I'm worried. :-(
Every child is different. Louis didn't say anything but "dada" until he was 13 months or so. Our son is 20 months old and he says clearly: okay, sky, blue, purple, otto (our dog), mama, mom, dada, nana, papa, grandma, grandpa, juice, eat, nigh nigh (good night), hi, bye bye, teeth, uh oh, shoes, go, oh wow!, yum, ucky, peas, buba (for bottle), hot, cold, all gone, car, bike, and (of course) "no!" I think that's about 30 words or so. He hasn't added any for the last few weeks except for "purple". He says a lot more words not-so-clearly, but only he knows what he's saying!;)

I just want to re-emphasize what others have said...every child is different. At 18 months Carlton was only saying a handful of words. I expressed concern to our pediatrician and his nurse. The nurse intially worried me saying he was not talking enough and needed to be evaluated. Then the Dr. basically said phoey that he was perfectly fine and he would not worry until 2-2.5. Sure enough at about 23 months he started talking non-stop. I don't know how many words he has but it's probably around 50ish and he's starting to put 2-3 words together. Everyday it's something different. I don't understand everything he says, but we are getting there. Talk to your doctors, give it time and trust your instincts. :)
Our daughter just turned 2 (home at 4.5 months old), and like some others have said....she chats my ear off. I will say that at her 18month check she wasn't saying/talking all that much. Her Dr. said she was right on track and that she would really start using more words in sentences soon. I didn't really think she was right, but she was. It seemed like one day my daughter went from using many single words to speaking in short sentences. I laugh sometimes at how "grown-up" she seems when we are having a conversation.. Don't worry, your child will be chatting your ear off in no time.
Our son came home 2 days before his 6 month birthday. He turned 2 in June. He talks non stop. He's starting to say 3 word sentences. One day last week in the car he said "Daddy's a monkey". Many of his words are incomplete. Wa=water How=house He's been quick to talk but slow on the physical side. DIdn't walk until he was 18 months old. Just started running and jumping.
My oldest is 2 in a couple weeks. She can say two-word phrases and can say and identify about 150+ words. I was keeping track, but then the list got too long. We have mini conversations... although they're usually about sister, cartoons, Barney, etc. Your son will speak in his own time. :)

My understanding is that there are milestones and guidelines, but no norm, per se. I really am not close enough to anyone who has adopted, however, I know for certain, that my dear niece and nephew, now respectively 5 and 3 (homemade kids) were extremely slow to speak. The doctors never worried that much, the mom did, though!
All of a sudden ( Andrew) now age 3, apparently has started to spurt out words and talk (constantly)... but he didn't say more than 5 or 6 at age 2.
Like someone said, all kids are different. Not quite being an official mom (with kids at home yet) - I'm obviously not the authority... but I personally don't think it's time to be too worried yet.
Please do keep us posted -
Our dd came home when she was almost 5 months old and she turned 2 in May. At her 18 month check-up our pediatrician was concerned for her expressive language and referred us to the local early intervention program. Our dd tested for expressive language around 12 months, but her receptive language was almost 24 months. It is true, she understands everything! She doesn't miss a trick!
With the program we started out learning sign language for every day words like: juice, mama, dada, milk, more...you get the idea. After about 2 weeks of this she began to say the word as she was signing. She has improved tremendously and we are now working on 2-3 word phrases.
I was told by our EI worker that they were not as concerned with her because she could understand so much. She is just a late talker.
I'm wondering why a professional in the area of speech pathology would be so wishy washy and hedging your questions? They should be honest with you about your child's progress so that as a team, both the parents and workers can develop an action plan that best suits your family.
Good luck to you!

Silvia came home a 6.5 months....at 2 she had quite a few words (though not all understandable by anyone other than us).
At 2.5 she is definately chatty...she puts together larger sentences, repeats pretty much EVERY word she hears.
My favorite phrase today is "Mommy, I have issues"

Our DD talksup a storm. Ther is not a lot she can not say. Guatemala was mastered in a day. She says 3-4 word sentences. I have noticed that she talks more and a lot clearer than other 2 year olds. Other peole have commented as well, so I don't think it's just that I understand her better. She says things like " Me go swimmin", "Me fun swimmin", "My baby Broder Tistofer", ect.
