Hello everyone! Yes I have another hair question ;) but my baby is a boy...8 months old. Currently I'm washing his hair with baby shampoo (moisturizing Huggies something) and I keep it greased with either the "Motions" conditioner cream or "Just for Me" cream stuff (it's clear...almost waxy a little bit). The Motions is lighter so I just kind of see what his hair needs as to which one to use. I would say I put it on his hair about once every two or three days...depending. I don't use a conditioner...and I used to put baby oil in his hair in the bath right before I wash it..then wash it out (I had a couple of my AA tell me to do this..it helped with his scalp..but I don't think it's helping now). My question is that his hair is starting to get long enough and thick enough to have to brush. Of course he HATES it (I use a wide tooth comb). How often do you brush your child's hair? I do it after the bath but then about once every two days or so. I just bought "Motions" brand leave in conditioner and that really helps before brushing...is that okay to put in? His hair is healthy and growing (the back tends to be the driest spot...is that normal?) but I want to make sure I'm doing everything right. At eight months what was your technique (or whenever your child had lots of hair)? did you use a specific shampoo and conditioner? How often do you brush out and grease the hair? Thanks in advance. I know everyone varies so I'm just wanting a wide variety of opinions :)

My youngest son had tons of curly, straight hair down his back. About 6 inches if combed out. I did not do much to his hair, I used a pick, when I wanted the full effect lol Most times I moisturised it, deep down, using my fingers to comb through his hair to enhance his curls. Your DS is still young, and I am not one to expose babies to too much chemicals or herbal based natural products so soon. I like the olive oil and water combo spritz, I use that every day on DDs hair (soft, and fine hair) to keep it moist, and detangle while I comb her hair. I use Oyin whipped Shea butter on her hair a couple times a week, that allergy wise she has been tolerated pretty well by DD (23 months old)The dry spot is more than likey where he rubs his head, since we are all using the SIDS prevention position, a lot of babies dry out or lose their hair there.
Okay after listening to everyone here (and to some girlfriends of mine)...I think I'm not using the conditioner cream enough (just the daily conditioner stuff) as I wasn't doing this every day or even every other day. I will try the oil though...it might help and I do hate putting so much gunk in his hair so early. I think the trick seems to be to put it in before brushing to help it...it just always seems like I am putting in too much.... I have to say though, it's hard for me to imagine my little boy in braids at this point...but I can definetely see how it might be easier than brushing every day!! I have to start adding the brushing in the morning to our daily routine :( I hate hearing him cry...but he has to get used to it (I try to be as gentle as I can). I usually don't over oil it before I brush it, but I think that might make it easier...
Yeah I have been trying to grease it every day....is there anything you do for that particular spot that is different to help it? It's starting to grow...he just has that "line" on the back of his head, but I see a LOT of babies have this (most actually). I am definetely not cutting his hair until he is one...I can't imagine the looks I would get at the salon bringing in such a small baby! LOL It's really not that long yet anyways...and I love the way it looks...even those sides that tend to flare out :) That's my baby!! I'm not ready for him to look like a little boy yet!! LOL

The first cut, does change the look. True, some babies regardless get the Friar Tuck look lol with the rubbed out hair back, and at times the sides. Big ds hair thinned out in the back, little ds was just a hairy one. Just spritz it daily, with a little light olive oil and water daily, keep your old every couple of days schedule for the other part of his hair that is a different texture. The spritz is good for no build up. Personally the just for me stuff is too waxy, and the baby's hair does not need all of that. If he is not mobile yet , place him on his tummy, or in the exacauser to keep his head from rubbing on stuff.
I don't think that spot on the back of the neck is going to get a whole lot better. I have 4 black (and biracial) children and, except for one that is also native american, that "kitchen" (as it is called by AA folks) is always an issue. Spray it well so that a comb can get through it. It is what it is. I don't know about you guys but when I comb my long Italian hair, I get that same spot in the back where I have to be careful because it tangles.

We use the olive oil and water spritz and it is really great. I also mosturize with Carol's Daughter hair milk, and wash once a week. And boy do we have a Kitchen. I just comb through it (wide toothed comb) and pray for the best. :-)The hardest part of doing my daughter's hair is chasing her around the house to try and get it done. More for you and Cooper to look forward to:happydance:
Your baby has similiar hair to my DDs. I twist or braid her hair at night prior to her going to bed. It maintains the moisture better that way, and decreases any breakage, allowing the baby's hair to grow out evenly. In the 3 months that we had dd, the hair on the back of her head, has grown at least an inch, and a half, (it was 1/2 inch in the beginning) allowing me to make little ponies/puffs.DDs "kitchen" (the kitchen is at the nape of the neck) is fine, and swirly, some of it laying flat against her neck.

I use Oyin Whipped Pudding (shea butter), every couple of days, as a heavier hair moisturizer. The daily spritz is to detangle, and add moisture, the water is good for that, the olive oil adds some shine etc; I wash her hair with baby shampoo, and then add Oyin after while wet. I use this daily to avoid build up, I am not too keen on using all the other products as yet. Since she is still a baby, it is more of a personal choice for me.
Natalie, I wash his hair pretty much whenever I bathe him (but that's not every day). I massage his scalp really well when I wash it, and sometimes even scrub it with a brush. He doesn't seem to mind at all. I started the frequent washing when he was younger, because it helped control his cradle cap. Now, it's just a habit. I've also noticed that my own (AA) hair does not dry out as much when I wash it more often. (It's all the other stuff I do that dries it out!) I use Johnson's baby shampoo, but immediately follow with Carol's Daughter's hair milk, while it's still wet. I comb it as soon as I put the hair milk. As long as (1) I only brush it when it's slick with shampoo, and (2) I only comb it right after applying the hair milk, ds' complaints are minimal. If I wait too long to comb it, though, he screams as if I'm trying to kill him! The hair milk keeps his hair very soft and shiny (but not greasy or heavy). After the initial application, though, tangles will return, which is why I have to comb it right away. So far, this has worked for us, but I'm intrigued by the oil/water spritz, and the Huggies shampoo that everyone else seems to be using! For the oil spritz, do you spray it in your hands then rub it in your LO's hair? If no, how do you keep from spraying a bouncy LO in the face? Char
