I have a few possible names for my birth-grandmother (my mother is the adoptee), as well as the lady's supposed year of birth.
We know she was said to have later married and had a child between 1938 and 1941, and I'm wondered if marriage and birth information for VA has been compiled for those years, and is it public information. (I know some of this data was, up through 1938. I found my mother listed on an ancient birth index under her original name!)
Or in the worst case scenario, could I fly out there and go county to county, asking to look through City Hall records and/or registries...or is that stuff even open to the public? Because if I see a lady with the name(s) _____ _______, born in ____, either getting married or having a child in those years, that would be someone I would want to find out more about. But I don't know where that information is kept, or who can look through it.
(Unfortunately, the names on the birth index for the parents are fake...the birth mother was in a bit of a panic at the hospital and wasn't truthful...but then, who can blame her?)
Boy, your story looks familiar!
My mother was adopted at birth-in Virginia-back in 1952. It's a LONG story, but after many years of searching, I managed to find my biological grandmother. Amazing!
To answer your question, yes, there are records posted on Virginia marriages from 1938 and on. If you have a name, you have a good chance of finding her. (All we had to go on was a name. We had no knowledge of where she was from or anything).
There are other records that can be searched as well.

I have paid memberships to a couple of websites that could contain the info that you're looking for.
