Any thoughts on where to find a baptism gown for our DS that is not outrageously priced? We have not surveyed family since we have not decided who to ask to be Godparents yet...

Our son was 8 months by the time he was baptized. A white garment is necessary, but it doesn't have to be a gown, unless of course that is your choice and is important to you - then by all means.
We had a pair of white old navy pants and a white onesie with collar and button front. He looked super cute. My DD was about the same age, so I used the same pants and a girly white collared onesie with button front.
Pant - $4
Shirts $4 and $6
We opted for bare feet and no bonnets or other accessories. Our Priest requests that for the ceremony the garment be able to open in the front for easy access to the chest and no head wear for the holy oils to be applied. He actually commended our choices for the garment we chose for our children.
Hey good luck with the baptism! In our church we call it a dedication... This outfit was at JCPenney for about 20 dollars on sale. They had a little bible and shoes and other stuff too. It's not exactly a gown but they did have gowns as well, some full length and some of the old fashioned kind that are really long.
Kee was about 3 months at the time but they had bigger ones.
Athena's was really beautiful... I got hers at Dillards for almost the same price. Also I saw some nice ones at Babiesrus.
We got K's at Baby Depot--the baby department of Burlington Coat Factory. They have a big selection there. K was 1 year old when baptized. It was a white dress, came to her knees, I still love the dress, and her cousin wore it the next year for her baptism. It was probably around $20, about.

My mil bought a gown when I was expecting my oldest. (first grandchild) he was baptised in it, and then she had a friend embroider his name and the date in white thread around the hem, so you have to look close to see it. Since then all her grandchildren have been baptized or dedicated in the same one and all the names are on there. My dd was 10 months old when she was baptized, so she wore a little white eyelet dress I bought in Russia (we kept it of course!) and we used "the" baptismal gown as a blanket so it was there and her name is on it. My son has not used it, though we may use it for confirmation or if he decides to be baptized again. He was six when we got him and has been baptized twice. When she bought it, it was fairly plain, but for my neice she added lace to it to make it more girly and then removed it for the next baby (boy). Anyway, we love the idea and my sil and I have already talked about passing it back and forth for our grandchildren someday.
Did you find one and did you ask someone to be a godparent yet?
PS Momraine... how sweet!!
(If you post pics, can I see?)
All three of my boys were baptized in white gowns...
I found them cheapest on ebay.... there were many styles to choose from...

Thanks for all the good tips. I have checked the consignment stores, but they don't seem to have any right now. I think I will end up doing something off ebay unless someone in our family has something appropriate that we can borrow.
Our finalization has been postponed from the original Aug 7 date to late September. We are having issues with getting birthfather to sign so now we have to go through the process to publish. We are sad that we will not be able to have the Baptism before school starts to allow our family from out of state to attend. We will wait to make our final choice of Godparents until we know who will be available to be here for the Baptism.
My husband is suggesting we wait until Thanksgiving weekend, but I am not interested in waiting that long. Besides, that is the start of a very busy time for everyone.
Thanks again.

Hi, just wanted to add that I baptized my son prior to his finalization. The priest held on to the certificate until I presented the new birth certificate and adoption papers, but it was important to me to get him baptized at a young age. I am glad I did too, because his adoption was not finalized until he was almost 3.
Nawlinsmom,
I would do this in a heartbeat, but our priest will not perform Baptism until after finalization. He had a bad experience years ago after he baptized a baby and then the adoption did not go through. Apparently, the birthmother was Jewish and was very unhappy about the Baptism. They had to go to the Bishop to have him "un-baptized". Not sure that it can really be undone, but the birthmother felt better about it.
So long story short, we will be waiting;) Our finalization is now scheduled for Sept 25th. He will be almost 3 months at that time. I just don't want to wait until Thanksgiving when he will be 5 months. The priest did speak to us about babies actually being baptized by their parents love until the actual water baptism takes place.
Thanks for your suggestion. I know some priests will do this for parents.

Hoping, one thing that was great about our elderly priest is he didn't care that DD was either adopted (I don't think he read the form!) or that the adoption wasn't finalized. (I think he cared more about the "donation" for the Christening...but that's the cynic in me!).
Good luck with your finalization and your baptism. Make sure you let us know how it goes and post pix if you are comfortable!

Thanks for all your suggestions. I ended up finding a really sweet one piece cotton sweater outfit with a cross stitched into it on the chest--so cute. And just under $50 at Von Maur. They had some gowns that were more feminine too.
I would post a pic of my sweet little guy if I knew how...
I'd love to see a pic!
