Hi everyone!! My husband and I have been contemplating adoption for about 2 years now, and have recently become sure that it is the right step for us to take. I am 30, he is 33. We have been married for almost 5 years. I have a son from a previous relationship who (due to a looooong story) lives with his father in GA. My husband and I have been trying to get pregnant for 3 years now, off and on (when he isn't deployed). He is now home for the rest of his career, which will be when he retires in about 4 1/2 years. We have decided that it is selfish of us to go to drastic measures trying to get pregnant, when there are so many children out there who need a home. We are interested in a special needs adoption. I have not been told about any hurdles that we may face due to our military status, but I have been told that we are not subject to the normal residency requirements because we are military. We live in VA, I am a NC resident and he is a SC resident. We just haven't been in VA long enough for me to claim residency yet. I will be a full time student starting in October, and he is in the Marine Corps, currently instructing at one of the career schools. Just wanted to give a little introduction, and hoping to get some guidance and support along the way!! :)
Welcome! We were an active duty Marine Corps family when we adopted our son. Due to ourson's medical needs my DH is a reservist now. Anyway, being a military couple you will face some unique obstacles, but they're really not too bad. We adopted a newborn and were both 23 years old when he was born. He ended up being born with a very surprise heart defect and he is very medically fragile. If we adopt again, we'll definitely look for another baby with special needs.

How hard was the whole process as far as getting your adopted child enrolled in DEERS and Tricare? I don't know anyone who has adopted a child, all my friends just keep popping out their kids naturally, so noone really has answers. I know we have a while until anything will be final, and we are just at the beginning of our journey, but I am the type that likes to be over prepared.

What was difficult was talking to 5 people and getting 5 different answers. :eyebrows: Don't waste any time going into DEERS and talking to them and asking these questions. I called and got a much clearer answer. Basically what we needed was an affidavit from our attorney stating that we'd had our son since birth and that we were responsible for his care and a DDform something or other. I think that was all I needed. They'll ask for the 'adoption papers' but they do NOT know what they're talking about. You don't get finalization papers for months and your kids qualify from the date of placement. I went in with my paperwork and he was enrolled in Deers promptly, and then Tricare. He's also in the EFMP and had an awesome case manager for a year.
