12 y/o ds (adopted at 2 1/2 years old) has significant learning delays. He was tested about 5 years ago by a pedi neuro psychologist and was diagnosed with dyslexia and scored at least 1 year behind age level at that time (among other things).
Right now, J seems to be stuck academically. He is a homeschooler and we can't seem to get past the 3rd grade level in reading, writing, and math. He has an OK grasp of Bible and Science. We keep modifiying his curriculum in order to accommodate his learning needs but he is not progressing. We could have him tested using the typical ways homeschoolers usually do but, quite frankly, his reading and test taking skills are so poor that I don't think it would be an accurate assessment.
He sees a neurologist for a VP shunt in his brain due to an arachnoid cyst. His appt is tomorrow afternoon. I would like J to be tested again to evaluate his academic level as well as areas of weakness and delay. I need to re-evaluate his strengths so I can meet him where he is now and move on. However, I do not know what to ask for. Is there a specific test that I could request to evaluate him? I've heard of the WISC. Is that it?
Thanks for any input!
during my internship as a school counselor, I used the WISC to evaluate a bilingual child to see if the academic problems were related to language barriers. it can be used for a number of things though. it goes through different subjects (math, reading, etc) and helps see where the child is falling academically. a school should be able to do one. sometimes the counselor does it, sometimes the psychologist. even though your child is homeschooled, your local school is responsible for him and should be able to test him. I've heard outside places can cost a lot of money to do the testing so I'd try the school first.
