I have a FD who is 9 and has MANY of the characteristics of FAS, but mom denies ever having had a drink of alcohol in her life. Now I am the last one to blindly believe anything bp say, and mom has a tendency to lie, BUT she is not the drug/alcohol type, so I don't necessarily disbelieve her on this one either. PLUS mom has many of the same characteristics, including some of the facial stuff. I am looking for possible answers that could be genetic, or otherwise.
FD has no behavior problems to speak of, she is very mild mannered and sweet. She has low IQ, inability to reason or think critically. (In trying to help her reason through the fact that snow melts because the heat of the sun melts the cold snow, it took 3 days just to lead her to the conclusion that ICE is COLD - she told me it was to make water healthy.) She learns something one day and seems to master the skill, and then the next day she doesn't even know where to begin. She has very low comprehension - nowhere near an adequate knowledge of vocabulary for her age, and is not able to determine vocabulary in context. She also has delayed emotional skills - few friends and doesn't interact with them consistently at an age appropriate level. She doesn't think things through and can be easily manipulated (she is very bonded to bmom and when the cw was talking to the kids about adoption, she stated that she wanted to stay with mom... until her 6yo sister explained that she wanted to be adopted and if 9yo went back to bmom, 6yo would be taking the pink rubber ball with her and 9yo wouldn't be able to play with it anymore, so 9yo said oh, ok, I will be adopted). She lies about the stupidest things and will continue to maintain her lies even while staring at evidence of the truth, or after accidentally telling me the truth - again, it is mostly stupid things rather than things that will get her something. She also has speech issues - pretty much the same issues that are common with FAS kiddos; also common ones for kiddos in general though. Facial characteristics include the smaller wide-set eyes, moderately thin lip, short nose, non-symetrical ears.
Bmom also has many of the facial characteristics, low IQ, the weird lying - and sticking to her lies, inability to reason and critically think, no concept of relevence of topics, etc.
Any ideas on other conditions I can ask for her to be tested for, or specific tests for me to request? Now that school is out, I am ready to really hit the pavement with appointments and testing and anything I can to get some answers for this little girl!

Not an FAS look-alike idea, but one that goes with the understanding part...
I once knew someone who did not realize that beer was a type of alcohol. She really truly thought that only "liquor" like rum, whiskey, etc and wine counted.
And of course there are teenagers who don't totally comprehend that wine coolers are alcohol.
So is there a way someone could run through all the different types of alcohol to see if maybe she drank something that she didn't realize was alcohol? Also maybe ask if she's ever ordered or bought anything she had to show her ID to get? Or ask if she's ever drunk anything that made her drunk or buzzed? And then of course ask her what she DOES drink, like what she gets at a restaurant or what she buys at the store.
Just another thing to check on, hope it helps.
