The adoption of our daughter was finalized a few weeks ago and we immediately applied for a passport, as we are travelling overseas in 4 weeks. We were told by our lawyer, that we don't need a birth certificate (which we will only receive in about 6 months), however the passport office now sent us a letter saying we need a birth certificate???
I would appreciate any advise as we are getting nervous...
thanks in advance!
Yes that's a requirement. I got a passport for my son with his original birth certificate and a certified copy of court documents that stated he was in the custody of DSS (and I think DSS signed a form if I remember correctly.)
NOW that we finalized I have to reapply for a passport - so I spent 100 bucks to get one with his birth name and more $$ to get one that's correct.
I'm not sure how you'd do it... The best idea I can think of is to send his original birth certificate and certified court documents that say he was adopted and XXXX is his new name. that might work...

Just to give an update: We called the passport office with our lawyer and were told that we can submit the old original birth certificate. 1 day later, however, I got a call from the same office that the birth certificate is now not required after all and they have all they need...
We received the passport a few days later :cheer:
