So my 2 year old has been going to preschool, and one day last week hubby saw her hanging her arms down to ape walk and making monkey sounds. He didn't like it at all.
I am curious as to where this started, because it certainly didn't start at home. Maybe they pantomimed monkeys at preschool? Maybe they acted out different animals. I'm sure those kids (ages 2-3) didn't come up with it so it must have been something they did in class. Should I ask the teacher about it? I don't want to make a big deal out of nothing but at the same time I don't want her going in walmart and doing it in front of people!
You might check with the teacher and ask - but there are a lot of active songs that teachers do with preschoolers that involve imitating various animals.

Absolutely...we do tons of 'acting' like animal songs at my preschool and I always include the monkey, because it's an easy one for preschoolers to do.
She probably did learn it in school. I used to work with all ages in daycare. And we did various songs, activites with animals.
A big on was over the summer we made the classroom look like a jungle with the kids art work and made monkeys out of paper plates!
My dad is very sensitive about my kids pretending to me monkeys. (he hates that my sons nickname is monkey but he CLIMBS EVERYTHING and always has)
And I get it that but should we really discourage a childs creativity and imagination because of the past?
I remember as a child coming home pretending to be a monkey after playing on the monkey bars at school and my dad FLIPPED out, I had no clue that it had a racial undertone. But it also has to do with each person
If your husband did not like the gesture, I would just haev a nice chat with the daycare teacher,
We ALWAYS encouraged parents to talk, we wanted feedback, afterall they are your children and we want to create and envirnoment where you felt comfortable with what we were teaching.
