:woohoo:
Our agency called us yesterday and we were chosen by a BM!
She is 19 and has one child already, the father is also 19. We have to travel to Atlanta and then I will have to stay in Atlanta for a week + until the paperwork is done.
I am so excited and scared. The baby is due in 4 weeks!!! Luckily we are prepared for everything except a double stroller and a new crib mattress. We don't know the sex of the baby yet. I suppose that will be something to consider because we only have girl clothes!
I have a question, what did you tell people about the parents history? The father is currently in jail for shoplifting and assaulting a police officer. Is that something we should reveal to people? I don't find it shameful. People make bad choices and I think he is correcting his choices by giving his child a loving home.
Also how did you go about choosing a name for your child? I love unique (but not bizarre) and strong names. I would also love a name that embraces some our child's history. We instance one name we like is Ellison after the author Ralph Ellison (Invisible Man). We are very avid readers and love the idea of possibly naming our child after a AA author or character. Of course I am big on Shakespearean names too but my husband has nixed all of my female choices booo.

I like that you're choosing names that connect to things you enjoy. My husband and I are early in the process, but we decided that we'd like to give names that tie to our history. We've chosen family names, but names connected to your love for reading--that's really cool.
As for you Dad, maybe he'll come around once there is a baby, maybe he won't. We live in the South (interracial couple) and we smile at the Country men in overalls at the Cracker Barrell with their biracial grandkids. My dad gave us some grief when we were dating/planning to get married. We were watching "Say Yes to the Dress" in front of him the other day, and he made the comment, "You didn't ask me to help you pick out a dress. I'd have picked out a good one!" My first thought was, "Um, you didn't want to have anything to do with the wedding" but my second thought was, "how wonderful it is that he loves my husband so much now, and that he 'got over himself' in time to walk me down the aisle." Either way, surround yourself with people who share your joy. How sad for him that he's missing out on how wonderful this is.

Most of the names of our children aren't mainstream. I like different names too; though I have to admit, the star who named her daughter-Apple...was a bit too much for me.
Anyway....before we adopted our first baby (many years ago)....I read a good book by (I think?) David Anderson. One of the things I remember about it, was a section about whether to devulge any (or in part) info about the child's bioparents.
He wrote that IF you tell others details about your child, you have no control---later on---regarding who tells your child--and when. Now, believe me, I'm one to tell details early in life...BUT, when reading his comments as to: "Do YOU want to be the one to tell your child XYZ....or, the neighbor down the street because she heard about it from someone else....?
The answer then was simple. I probably shared too much about my first two babies...and learned the hard way. I know better with my youngest four.
Good luck; and I hope things go well for you!
Sincerely,
Linny

Great list. I love Delaney, Hadley, and Kalinda. Also love Ellison and Holden. Too funny about Thoreau. My best friend (Who has 4 kids) would share the names she was thinking about with all of us friends so we could come up with every nickname and way to mak fun of it we could think of...then she'd choose whichever she thought they could most easily live with! Even though you might not call him Doug, someone in his life would end up chopping it off...

My only thing with the name Zoe is how to pronounce it. Is it like toe or is to zo- ee:) Good point with the I-moan. I always think of the stripper in show girls:) I love then name Lafayette but then I think of the true blood character. I absolutly love him though:)Does anyone know of a good site to find names with an African or African- America origin? I don't want to name my child something just for that reason, but I would like to look through more options. For instance, I just stumbled upon Malik which I LOVE. Of course I am really just bitter because my gf named her son Omari and I love that name. I can't steal it though:(
