Anton and his twin brother were born by their surrogate mother in January 2010 in Moscow (Russia). On the same day, their biological parents who live abroad received a picture of the newborn twins. One of the twins looked healthy, the other one was covered with wounds and bruises. It turned out that he was born with a genetic Butterfly skin disease (Epidermolysis Bullosa, EB). The biological parents took only baby. Anton was left in the hospital, forever.
For Anton, having the Butterfly skin disease means that each careless touch leaves a bruise, blister or a wound on his tiny body, that's why the hospital staff who take care of the boy have to keep him swaddled. Day by day, hour after hour, this little baby is lying in his crib, motionless, swaddled from head to toes, dreaming of someone's loving, affectionate touch.
As of today, there is no cure, only wound care treatment and pain management, but given good, proper care, the baby could live a long life. Every day Anton needs special medications and bandages that heal the wounds and cost in Russia about $2000 per month; the hospital budget cannot cover it. There are no local aid funds to help children with EB. Most of Russian families could not provide proper care to Anton because of their poor financial situation, even if they wanted to adopt him. Thus, he will most likely end up in one of local orphanages already full of abandoned kids, with an extreme shortage of qualified staff and no money for medication. For Anton such an outcome may be fatal.
In the United States of America there is a Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa Research Association (Debra). This is a national non-profit organization dedicated to finding a cure for EB. The EB Medical Research Foundation raises funds to support EB research and offers support to families with children suffering from EB , such as practical, hands-on information on wound care, medical supplies, medical insurance which can cover special medical needs. Debra does not have an office in Russia, that's why it would be so wonderful to find home for Anton in the USA.
Our goal is to find a loving family for Anton. Please, tell as many people as you can about this baby!
Psychologists say that Anton is a very smart, calm and an incredibly patient boy. He watches adults come into the room and greets them with a smile despite the fact that they often cause him devastating pain changing his bandages. No matter how well nurses care for Anton, it will always be just their job, and at the end of the day, Anton will always be alone in his crib. Just look at him, look into his eyes! He doesn't belong to this place, he needs and deserves a loving family.
If we find a family for him, the adoption process will take months. During this time Anton will still be in hospital - swaddled, lying in his crib, crying from devastating pain and loneliness, looking at his only crib toy he has been looking at for more than 10 months of his life.
While he is waiting for his mommy and daddy, you can help him to stay alive by donating as much as you can. Any amount will make a change for Anton. Whoever saves one life saves the entire world.
