I first posted this in the foster care & adoption forum, but now that I've found this forum I'm going to re-post to see what all of you have to suggest.
Help! We are beginning the transition process for adoption of an AA little girl. I've been searching for pretty little hair accessories such as beads, clips, etc. as well as for hair care products. None of the stores in our area seem to have much of a selection, if any. I've been searching on line as well and I'm not finding much. Does anyone have any suggestions for websites to order fun hair accessories or specific hair products from?? I'm trying to get prepared, but feeling lost!
A couple of suggestions I've heard good things about for products are : Carol's Daughter, Curls.biz, and Uncle Funky's Daughter (I think that's correct). Any thoughts on these?
I've also been scouring the internet for fun hair accessories, like beads, snaps, etc. I've found a couple sites, but not a lot of selection out there. Any suggestions???? Where do you get your hair accessories? Our local stores don't carry these. Thanks in advance for any advice you have!
There are a bunch of threads on this on the transracial board.
Happy hunting... it's fun buying hair accessories!!
:-)
PS One brand I use a lot as a moisturizer is Talia Waajid.. some CVS stores sell it on the shelf or your local black beauty store.

I'm AA and I live in a all white community. When I look for hair care products I usually go to a more racially diverse area or a black area and look for a hair care store (beauty supply store).
Carols Daughter is good... but expensive. You can look for Optimum products, Just for Girls, even some old fashion pommade (the hair greese that's green or blue). Just go to CVS. Really its how you care for the hair, not what you buy.
Keep her hair braided or in pony tails. Until she is old enough to take care of her hair. Wash it once a week. Then add a little bit of hair Reese to the scalp buy parting in small sections. If you keep the scalp lubricated her hair will be softer and more manageable for you.
Also try to avoid getting her a relaxer for the sake of it being easy. As a aa woman who had a relaxer early in life...it can really damage your hair if you are not old enough to care for it properly. And once you get one its hard to go back.
It will pay to find a good aa salon that does kiddie braids. And get her hair braided once every two weeks. It will also teach her upkeep and she will see the other aa women taking care of their hair in the salon.
No matter where you live there is a aa community within driving distance.

I just ordered some hair accessories from "Snapaholics."snapaholics.com - snapaholics Resources and Information.
I also like the website Keep Me Curly!. She is a white woman that has adopted AA girls. She has a lot of great tips and how-to videos.
Hope this helps.

@sol317:
Relaxer is also a chemical, and they make it special formula for kids (not sure if it's much different than the adult formula) like "Just For Me," but it just seems wrong to put chemicals on your babies. I met a CC mom who had used it on her mixed daughter starting at under 12 mos old!
