Hi all!
I'm Desirae and will be a Single Mom by Choice :) I have been lurking on this website for a couple months and have finally decided to join because my process of becoming a mommy is slowly but surely moving along. I attended the orientation class in June, submitted my apps in July and was called last week to schedule for my initial interview. It is scheduled for October 5th. What should I expect? How long does it last? Thanks in advance.
Congratulations on taking the step! The initial interview was about 30-60 minutes. They went over the apps that we had filled out. They also asked us some basic history, alcohol or drug abuse, mental health issues, sexual abuse, etc. for you or anyone in your family.
They went over some more forms and told us about the training schedule.
Good luck!

Thanks! I work night shift and my appt is scheduled for 8am. I was worried that I would be too sleepy to carry on a strong conversation. I can handle 30 minutes of basic questions. Can't wait for the next stage in this process :)
My interview lasted about 2 hours but it really didn't feel like an interview. It felt more like just a conversation between friends. I was horrendously nervous because I always fail interviews miserably, but it was much easier than I expected. We just talked a little about my past, my family, my expectations in what being a parent would be like, what type of child I was interested in, how I would handle being a single parent, etc. I was really surprised when I read the homestudy because it had a lot of stuff in it that I didn't even remember talking about, but we must have or else she wouldn't have known to write it. The conversation just seemed to flow naturally and I never felt like I was being interviewed or judged.
Wow, 2 hrs is a long visit. But I am pleased to hear that the interview was not too stressful. Hoping that it goes as well for me too :)

Just as Longing mentioned, the interview felt more like an easy conversation. The ladies were very nice, one showed up after we were done. I got there with plenty of time to spare because I was afraid of being late. The office didn't open until a few minutes after 8. They brought me in a few minutes later, had me fill out a few page questionnaire, did live scan fingerprints for the county, went back to finish filling out the questionnaire. Since the second worker was running late, I waited for a little while in the interview room. One of the workers then came in, gave me more paperwork for filling out at home and in the classes, went over a 3-4 page questionnaire about my life, then asked me what I am hoping for in regards to adopting. She let me know that I was recommended for the classes, which will start in January. The other worker arrived and we went over any questions that I had. I definitely felt it went smoothly and was on my way home by 10am. Good luck on your interview and let us know how it went :)
