Do adopted daughters get on with their adopted mothers?

My mom and I were like oil and water never did get along and still don't. I tolerate her for the rest of the family. That being said, I lived in a group home for many years... not adopted but had the most wonderful house parents and I and my (Foster, house parent, adoptive (but not legally) "MOM" got along great. I think it has more to do with personality than with the mode of relationship (but I may be wrong).
