We've finished our PRIDE classes in October. We also had our home inspection, First Aid/CPR, and medical reports completed.
We are waiting for the next step which is to complete our home study. It's been a couple of weeks and we are waiting to be assigned to an adoption SW. We are expecting to wait about a month before we are assigned to one.
Any feedback on what we should expect for our home study? From what I've read, it seems like the home study is not a pass/fail. Well, I suppose one could fail if they have a criminal record. However, should I expect that there is a way to fail it?
We have one bio son and I think we are great parents. We want to expand our family through adoption. We were hoping that that we could be matched with a 4 - 8 year old by end of next year. I guess it depends on if there is a waiting child that can be matched with us, right?
Should we get in touch with the county to check in or just wait until we get assigned to our adoptions worker? We're in San Diego county.
We're in Riverside County, so things are probably a bit different, but I'm sure there's also similarities. Our Home Study actually took 2 visits and was quite lengthy. As long as you're open & honest, you'll be fine. They asked questions about our relationship, our kids, how everyone (including our kids....even the ones that have moved out) felt about us adopting, etc. The SW also spoke with our kids that are still at home for about 10mins each. Their questions were very basic (favorite school subject, how they felt about adoption, etc).
Personally, I was always worried about being "lost in the shuffle." I don't know if it helped or not, but I would e-mail and/or call every couple weeks. My first call was just asking if they needed anything else from us and what kind of time frame we should expect.
My best advice is to try to stay busy during the process. I was always told to "trust the process." It was very hard to do as I'm not the most patient person....lol. However, we now have 2 precious boys that fit into our family perfectly :)
Good Luck!
