We are going to staffing in the next couple of weeks on a 5 year old little girl diagnosed with Autism. She is in another state , about 6 hrs away from us. I wanted to ask if anyone had adopted a child with Autism out of your state and find out how long your transition was, what your visits consisted of and any info you can give us. We have another child who is on the spectrum but is only mild behaviors.
Thanks!
I do not have a child with autism, but I teach children
who are Autistic. It is wonderful that you want to make
this little girl part of your family. Meeting new
people will probably be difficult for this child, but
if the situation is handled correctly, it could
go smoothly. Social stories, stories that explain
things that are going to happen and how) are
usually very helpful. Does she talk? Many children that have Autism have some difficulty with communication. Talking in short, simple sentences helps. I hope I haven't overwhelmed you! I think what you are doing is wonderful! I would definitely enlist the help of SW in easing this transition. I would also keep the visits short and frequent, if that's possible, so this little girl doesn't get as anxious as she might. Good luck and I hope everything goes well!
