Hi everyone, my husband and I are non-US citizens currently living in Kazakhstan as expatriates. We would like to adopt from within Kazakhstan while we are here and are unsure where to start. Much of the information available on the internet relates to US citizens living in the US and adopting from Kazakhstan.
Any help getting started would be appreciated!
There are two parts to adopting from another country. The first part is following all the laws of that country and the second part is following the immigration laws of your home country. So your situation would depend on a few things. How long are you planning to be in Kaz? If you are planning to stay there, then you only have to worry about their laws. However if you are planning to move to the US, you will have to figure out if the child will be allowed to come with you. That is probably also going to depend on if the adoption is finalized before you move and what types of visas you will travel on. If you plan to return to your home country, then you will need to learn the immigration rules for that country. Also if you are not moving, but want your child to have citizenship in your country you will need to find out the rules for that. Sometimes the immigration part is more complicated than the adoption part!
