I am not sure how to answer the question that my son and I get sometime.......
Do you have a dad? Where is the dad?
I am a single mom of an adoptive son. His father would be somewhere in Russia.
Any suggestions?
Do you have a dad? "Yes, everyone has a dad."
Where is the dad? "He is not a part of his life at this time." or "He is not in the picture." or "I am a single mom."
Hopefully that would dissuade further questions from all but the densest people. Although if it's a kid asking, maybe something like "Some people live with a mom and a dad, some people live with a grandma or grandpa, and some people live with either a mom or a dad. Our family has a mom."

I think that pretty well covered it. Those are the answers I generally give.
tell your son the real story... he'll live his whole life in a complete mess if he doesn't know his identity through the real parents.
