My 10 yr old daughter just got her period today. She is embarrassed to have gotten it so early. I wondered if this is common. My 2 older girls got it at 12. Any info would be so helpful. Thank you so much

Starting menstruation at 10 is totally normal, nowadays. It is not considered precocious puberty. While different ethnic groups may begin puberty a little earlier or later than others, ten is well within normal limits for all populations, including adopted Central American girls.
Nowadays, if a girl starts menstruating before age 7 or 8, and starts breast development, acquisition of pubic hair, etc. much earlier than that, it is considered precocious puberty, and parents will usually be referred to a pediatric endocrinologist.
The specialist is likely to recommend hormone treatments to slow things down a bit, because very early puberty can cause a child to stop growing, and because it creates social and emotional issues for a child not ready to experience them. The currently approved hormone treatment is with drugs called LHRH analogs synthetic hormones that block the body's production of the sex hormones that are causing the early puberty.

I started at 10.
For you, seeing a ped to determine next steps is important. girls slow down their rate of growth once puberty starts, so your daughter could be as tall as she will be at this point (she might grow a few more inches). talking to the ped will give you both an idea of how much she will grow.
Also, I don't know if the was the norm for anyone else who started at 10, but I had horrific cramping in the first few years. It was not unusually for me to miss school 1 day a month. the cramping subsided around 14-16.
Hugs to you
Thank you all so much for you replies. It made me feel better. If my children are upset then I am upset! She is taller than my 14 year old son. Although my son is very short for his age.
