Heya folks!!
Im just wondering what others have done with their newly adopted children and their insurance. Because all 4 of mine were considered special needs, they get to keep their medical cards. Im struggling with if I should add them to my insurance. None of them currently have any special medical needs. Seems like I would just be wasting money paying a higher premiums.
What did all of you do? Id appreciate any info or insight you could give. Im in KY.

I added Mickey as soon as I could so that we could see Drs that didn't accept Medicaid. But if you don't have that need, I think I would lean toward not wasting the money.
We put goober on. It was minimal to add him on where gpa works. He still has his Medicaid but it's so hard to find drs that take it, especially if a specialist is needed and he sees a pediatric behavior specialist.
We've got 2 options available in Medicaid. The one has NO dentists that accept it. The other has NO pediatricians who accept it
Adding him on just made things sooooo much easier!
My adopted daughter kept her Medicaid, I have a great Pedi that accepts the insurance, also no problem with a dentist in our area. Adding her to my insurance from work was extremely expensive, so I did check out other options, BlueCross/BlueShield has a great child only option that is reasonably priced. But I wouldn't waste your money adding the children to another medical plan if you already have a doctor that is familiar with them and accepts their insurance.
We added DS to ours because we're already paying the family premium, and this way his expenses go through our plan first, get applied towards our deductible, but then his Medicaid pays for it. It helps now that we're on a high deductible plan BC then we pay less out of pocket if one of us has an emergency.

We added all 5 of ours to the insurance we were already paying for a family plan donut cost nothing for them to be added. We live in a rural area so not many docs and no dentists take medicaid. Medicaid is our secondary insurance it's great piece of mind to know they are covered either way :)
I think it depends on the cost. I am lucky enough to have a union job where the cost for employee plus one is only $7 less per month then employee plus family, so my 5 will definitely be added to mine as soon as the adoption is final. I look at it as their expenses will apply to my deductible therefore actually making my out of pocket less at the end of the year. I am rarely sick but I have 3 with chronic health issues so we should meet the family deductible with them by the end of March. I think you need to weigh out all of your options but the questions I would ask myself is 1. What is the cost to add this child to my insurance? 2. Are there plenty of providers in your area who accept Medicaid? 3. How far will you have to travel for specialists that your child is likely to need? 4. Are there any secondary benefits to adding my child to my insurance? (Like my situation where the kids will meet the deductible before I do, and Medicaid ends up paying mt deductible). If the cost is high, you have plenty of providers in your area, and there is no secondary benefit then it's probably not worth the cost. If the cost is low, you have secondary benefits, or you have to travel to find a good Dr then it's probably worth it.
We kept the kids' insurance and did not add them to our's. At the time, all their doc's, even the specialized ones, accepted their insurance. That is still the case. I finally ran into an issue with an OT not accepting their insurance, but they directed me to someone who does. It was not an issue really.
Since we have been happy with the insurance so far, we did not see a reason to change. One thing I would like, is to know what is actually covered by their insurance. How do you go about getting a detail of what the insurance entails? You would think that would be something you would get somewhere along the way.
