"You're adopted"- why is this used in a derogatory way? I can't wrap my head around it, but it is. I worry about the kinds of adoption-related jokes kids sometimes make, and how to help children that are adopted handle it. What are some good responses to teach them? How do you help ease the sting?
Sometimes other kids are just mean, and if they weren't jabbing about adoption it would be their hair or shoes or whatever. With adults, most of the time I don't think adoption comments are made maliciously. Most people just don't know any better. The offhand remarks usually reflect more on the ignorance of the person than on the actual adoptee. Once you see it for what it is, the comments usually roll right off of you.
