What are some of the best ways you have helped your foster or older adopted child to feel comfortable when they first arrived?

I've read that one of the best things you can do to help a new foster child feel comfortable is to settle them into a routine as soon as possible. Walking them around the house, showing them where things are, explaining the daily schedule, etc. That way the child feels a little more secure knowing what will happen next. Other things that can help are small gifts and feeding the child a good meal.
