We are just beginning of the process of becoming foster parents but looking ahead trying to get ready for the dreaded home study. In our home we all live on the main floor. We have a basement but it is only currently used for storage and laundry. My kids do not go down there and we have a gate on the stairs. What should I do to get that area ready or will they focus on that area much since kids do not go down there at all? It is an unfinished basement so I'm really not sure where to even start. Help!

Hi. If you plan on fostering very young children, I think the gate will be sufficient. If you plan on fostering children that are old enough to open the gate, I would suggest locking any chemicals (such as the laundry detergent) and potentially hazardous items (such as tools, paint, etc. ) in a cabinet. Even a bike chain with a padlock is fine.
