So we recently took in two foster children (ages 1 day and 5 years) with almost no information about them.
Our curiosity got the better of us and we looked the parents up on facebook. Mom is looks like she lives on drugs. Dad has racist tattoos (SS tats), but he just went to jail.
The question I have is, how do we ask the 5 year old if he has taught her racist things? She's reacted funny to pictures of black people, but nothing overtly racist. We don't want to trashtalk dad, we just want to know.
Any thoughts?
Hi Lucas. Since she hasn't said anything overtly racist, I wouldn't even question her. At 5, she's still absorbing everything and if you're exposing her to diversity in a positive light, she'll catch on. Join a play group with kids of different races, watch TV shows with a diverse cast, and take her to busy places with lots of diverse people. She'll see diversity as the "norm" and phase out any potential biases her parents exposed her to.
