Hi there - I'm an adoptive parent of a 6yo who we adopted at 3 months. She's very bright and eloquent, but at night has several episodes of panic attacks and screaming and sobbing. Her only words are "I am afraid that you are going to leave the house." We know that she had some trauma / abandonment in those 3 months and we're in therapy with her. But, the night panics are really resistant to any change.
It's also very stressful for us as parents - difficult to sleep, heartbreaking to watch our kid go through this, and we can't get anything done around the house because she won't let us out of her sight. She panics if we go to the laundry room or to fetch the mail from the mailbox.
Any suggestions, for us or our kid?!
Trauma and/or loss therapy. EMDR is one type of trauma therapy. There are others but they escape me right now.
