I was born in New York City in the 1940s and adopted through the Sophia Fund, a private agency that only arranged adoption for girl babies. It closed its doors in 1949 and turned over its records to Spence Chapin Services to Families.
You may get an appointment to receive non-identifying background information. Following the court procedure, your parents may have received a copy of the Order of Adoption which could have your birth name and the name of your original mother on it. It would likely be on the first (possibly second) page of the court document.
