Hi! I would really like my stepfather, who is married to my birth mother, to adopt me. I want to surprise him on Father's Day with the documents, but I am getting a lot of mixed signals. I'm not sure which process to go through. Is it adult or stepchild adoption? I haven't seen my birth father since I was 2 and my stepfather raised me since I was 7. If I need my birth father to sign paperwork, I know how to get in contact with him, but I would rather not have to deal with him. Also as a side note, if I have my stepfather adopt me, does that legally take my birth father out of my life, or is that a different process? Lastly, I don't know if this will make taxes worse for my stepdad but I am an independent. Any kind of advise is very appreciated :) Thank you!
Not sure since you're not a minor. Your stepfather adopting you means he considers you his "natural" child. For a minor, the birth father relinquishes his rights. You'd need to speak with an adoption attorney.
