CASA volunteers are helping to make a difference in the Kansas Foster Care system; however, with the number of social workers dropping and the number of children in foster care rising, the children of Kansas are suffering. Over the past five years there has been a 39% increase in the number of foster children in the state. Additionally, because of the huge workload and the minimal pay, there is a high turnover in social workers. The news cites one situation where a 3-year-old in the system had three different case workers in just a 15-month time period. The child’s CASA volunteer helps to stabilize these changes, but it is still traumatic on the child.
